Is there an audience for an Architect contemplating a blogging venture?
I suppose the inside joke would be, when does an Architect need an audience? Wasn’t it Louis Kahn that conversed with a brick? “I asked the brick, ‘What do you like, brick?’ And brick said, ‘I like an arch.’”

Anyway, apart from our esoteric musings or self-referential ‘archi-speak’ we do have a wealth of passion, insight and knowledge that the world at large would benefit from. Does the world know it needs our input. Well, at least in part it does. I’ve spent some time online doing audience research and just this afternoon came upon this plea: “Dear World Class Architect: Please Blog.”
The request comes from a young Renaissance Man, Robert Hahn (a prolific blogger in his own right) who is not directly affiliated with the Architectural profession, but intrigued by it nonetheless. He contends that Architects deal in “seriously compelling content.” This is an important clue to audience relevance; a blog lives or dies based on the quality of its content.
Robert also points out that our work naturally lends itself to the ideal blog composition, a mix of words and pictures. How true that is, words and pictures, specs and drawings. Right?
His final point is one that we should all be reminded of regularly, and I quote:
“And last, but not least, non-architects are genuinely interested in architecture. It is an art form, after all, and one that impacts the average person’s life in subtle and not-so-subtle ways.”
I wish I had said that. I probably have said that. But it is more significant that someone apart from the profession has said it. People are genuinely interested in architecture. Please, read his blogged request, take it to heart. Ask yourself, in a Kahn-esque soliloquy if you like, “What serious content do I have to share with the non-architects of the world?”
Your audience awaits!
